Trek Patagonia for Marie Curie in Wales 2021

Thu, 11th November 2021 (12:00 am - 12:00 am)
Patagonia, Argentina

11 – 21 November 2021

Y Wladfa – The Colony – was established in 1865 when around 160 people from various parts of Wales sailed from Liverpool aboard the Mimosa. They settled in the Chubut Valley in Southern Argentina, where a culturally vibrant Welsh-Argentinian population still thrives today in the heart of Patagonia.

Follow in their footsteps while you experience the world-famous, breathtaking beauty of the Patagonian vistas.

Days 1 and 2

Depart UK for Argentina

We’ll be departing from London, boarding an overnight flight to Argentina. Upon arrving in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, we’ll be transferring to our hotel located in the city’s downtown area.

For the rest of the day we’ll be free to explore the city, soak up some Argentinian culture, and ready ourselves for tomorrow’s travel and trekking.

Day 3

Patagonia Trail

We’ll wake early and transfer to the domestic airport for our flight to Esquel in central Patagonia. Upon arrival, we’ll be driven to our starting point where we’ll have some lunch before beginning our acclimatisation walk into the Patagonia Steppe, traversing winding roads and woodland trails to reach our campsite nestled by the mighty Tecka River.

Day 4

The Welsh Patagonia Trail

For our first full trekking day we’ll be hiking to the fringes of the Patagonian Steppe. Our trail will meander its way along the river, leading us through a rich and varied landscape of rolling flatlands into sweeping slopes and lush valleys. We end the day at our campsite, close to Estancia Tecka.

Day 5

Bandido Mountain

On our fifth day, we’ll be heading north towards Cerro Bandido. We’ll traverse the canyons of cedar trees and crystal clear streams of melting snow-water until we reach our mountain camp for the evening. We’ll be pitched up on the western slopes, beneath the summit cliffs.

Day 6

Lake Rosario

We’ll continue heading north, striking into the heart of the Patagonian wilderness. After climbing the pass, we’ll be halfway to Lake Rosario and can enjoy our first panoramic view of the magnificent Andes mountain range stretching across the horizon, with the golden valleys of Trevelin nestled below.

Day 7

Nant y Fall

After breakfast, we’ll continue our descent along trails and dirt roads from Lake Rosario, following the famed Riflers Route to reach the most traditional Welsh site in the area, Nant y Fall.

Members of the local Welsh society will be waiting to hear all about our journey as we have dinner with some of the locals. After dinner, we’ll be taking a seven hour overnight coach transfer to the east coast of Patagonia (and the main Welsh region of Gaiman and Trelew).

Day 8

Gaiman and Trelew

We’ll start day eight with a traditional breakfast at the same place that Princess Diana visited many years ago and then head down the valley to Trelew. Once in town, we’ll visit some of its Welsh historical landmarks before enjoying a celebratory evening dinner to mark the end of our Patagonian adventure.

Day 9

Buenos Aires

In the morning we’ll transfer to the airport and take our domestic flight back to Buenos Aires, where we’ll have the day free for some casual sight-seeing, last minute shopping and relaxing before staying overnight.

Days 10 and 11

Depart Argentina

On our final day in Argentina, we’ll be transferring to the airport for our overnight flight back to the UK, arriving early the following morning.
